KARACHI: Mayor of Karachi and senior leader of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (Pakistan) Waseem Akhtar has been granted bail in another case pertaining to provocative speech of the party’s London-based leader Altaf Hussain, Samaa reported Saturday.

According to our correspondent, a local court in Karachi accepted bail application of Waseem Akhtar, who was elected Karachi Mayor in August this year. Since then, he is running the city affairs from prison.

Akhtar is apparently just one step away from release as he has acquired bail in 38 out of 39 cases. The last case in which the MQM leader is seeking bail is pertaining to treatment of terrorists. Hearing of his bail in that case is likely on Nov. 16.

“The judiciary has served me the justice and I had confident on judiciary from the outset… I will serve citizens after being released,” the imprisoned Karachi Mayor said while speaking to Samaa.

Waseem Akhter is in police custody since July this year. He is under investigation for several charges, including ordering crackdown on protestors during 12 May, 2007 riots when he was Sindh home minister. The incident resulted in a bloody massacre and death of 40 people. – Samaa
