General Qamar Javed Bajwa appointed as new army chief

Islamabad: The Federal government appointed General Zubair Mahmood Hayat as Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff  Committee (CJCSC) and General Qamar Javed Bajwa as Chief of the Army Staff (COAS).

According to a spokes person Prime Minister House, on the advice of Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, President Mamnoon Hussain promoted Lt Gen Zubair Mahmood Hayat and Lt Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa to the rank of General.

The profile of newly appointed CJCSC): Gen Zubair Mahmood Hayat was commissioned in Artillery Regiment on October 24, 1980.

He is graduate of Fort Sill Oklohoma, USA, Command and Staff College Camberlay United Kingdom and National Defence University, Islamabad.

He has wide experience of command, staff and instructional appointments. He has commanded an artillery regiment, mechanized division artillery, an infantry Brigade and an Infantry Division.

Gen Zubair has been Adjutant at PMA, Brigade Major of an Infantry Brigade, Army and Air adviser at Pakistan embassy in the United Kingdom. He has also been Chief of Staff of a Strike Corps, Private Secretary to the COAS and Director General Staff Studies Directorate at GHQ.

He has also held the appointment of Director General Strategic Plan Division (SPD). He has commanded 31 Corps Bahawalpur and is presently Chief of the General Staff at GHQ.

The profile of newly appointed COAS: Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa  was commissioned in 16 Baloch Regiment on October 24, 1980.  He is a graduate of Canadian Forces Command and Staff College, (Toronto) Canada, Naval Post Graduate University, Monteray (California) USA, National Defence University, Islamabad.

Qamar Bajwa has been an instructor at School of Infantry and Tactics, Quetta, Command and Staff College, Quetta and NDU. He has also been Brigade Major of an Infantry Brigade and Chief of Staff of Rawalpindi Corps.

Bajwa has commanded 16 Baloch Regiment, an Infantry Brigade and Infantry Division in Northern Areas ( Commander FCNA).

He has also commanded Pakistan Contingent in Congo. He has commanded Rawalpindi Corps, and is presently Inspector General Training and Evaluation at GHQ.

Prime Minister House spokesman Musaddiq Malik confirmed the appointment of General Qamar Javed Malik as Pakistan’s new army chief.

“I congratulate General Qamar Javed Bajwa for his appointment as Chief of the Army Staff,” Malik said, admitting that the appointment of new army chief was a difficult decision.

The spokesman also paid tributes to the outgoing army chief General Raheel Sharif for leading armed forces with valour and wisdom.

General Qamar Javed Bajwa had served as Corps Commander of Rawalpindi. He also remained Inspector General Training & Evaluation (IGT&E), GHQ and Colonel Commandant of the Baloch Regiment). He had also led the UN Peace Mission in Congo as Brigade Command.

Haris Nawaz, a defence analyst, said that the appointment of General Qamar Javed Bajwa was a very good decision.

“I personally know the new army chief. He is a very intelligent, professional and committed soldier,” he said, adding that he would try to strike a balance between civil and military relations.
