KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party’s Salam Shuhada rally begun Sunday in Karachi where the party’s young chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari spearheaded the caravan to observe anniversary of Oct 18, 2007 Karsaz bombing, Samaa reported.

A large number of workers gathered at Bilawal House, Clifton, from where Bilawal addressed the rally. He was on a special truck along with senior party leaders including former prime ministers Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and Raja Pervaiz Ashraf.

He was also accompanied by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, Maula Bux Chandio, Shireen Rehman, Shehla Raza and PPP leaders, senators, MNAs and MPAs.

Bilawal’s sisters Aseefa Bhutto and Bakhtawar Bhutto are also participating in the rally.

“We will complete the mission of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto who arrived in Pakistan in 2007 to rid people of religious elements… We will expelled an autocrat and restored democracy,” he said.

“We are the ones who gave this country Benazir Income Support Program and the China Pakistan Economic Corridor,” he claimed, amid chants of “Jiye Bhutto”.

He also used the occasion to criticised Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, saying that the PM is leading the country towards destruction.

“We will also rid people of takht-e-Raiwind,” he said, referring to the PM’s hometown as well as government.

Bilawal also vowed to continue struggle for freedom of Kashmir.

Paying tribute to martyrs of Karsaz blast, Bilawal said the 2007 bombing was worst attack on any political rally in country’s history.

After Bilawal’s speech, the caravan headed to Karsaz where it will culminate after passing through Lyari, M.A Jinnah Road, Numaish Chowrangi and Shahrah-e-Qaideen and other routes.

After his first stopover at Bilawal Bhutto, the PPP Chairman is expected to address his workers at three more points.

Tight security arrangements have been made for the rally, with thousands of policemen deployed at different areas.

Meanwhile, transporters in Karachi announced that public transport will not be available today on most of the city routes as police have impounded dozens of vehicles for the rally.

According to President of Karachi Transport Ittehad, Irshad Bukhari, PPP had booked at least 1100 minibuses and coaches, but despite this, police have impounded 150 more vehicles late night.

Various thoroughfares in Karachi were sealed on Sunday with shipping containers ahead of PPP’s rally.

According to our correspondent, Shahrah-e-Faisal was closed at Drig Road. Besides, all link-roads connecting to M.A Jinnah Road have been sealed with containers.

Sadar’s Corridor and Shahrah-e-Qaideen (Tariq Road) were also closed. – Samaa
