QUETTA: A roadside bomb apparently targeting a judge injured at least seven  people in Quetta on Thursday, officials said, days after a major attack killed most of the city's senior lawyers.

"The bomb was planted on a bridge in the city, which went off immediately after the vehicle of an Islamic court judge passed by it," Akbar Harifal, the home secretary of southwestern Balochistan province, told AFP.

The judge, Zahoor Shehwani, survived, he added, but the blast hit his security escort vehicle, injuring four police personnel and 10 passers-by.

No group immediately claimed responsiblity for the attack, which came three days after a bombing at a Quetta hospital killed at least 73 people, many of them senior lawyers.

The blast occurred in an area where residential apartments and government offices are located.

Security forces cordoned off the area and bomb disposal squad scanned the scene.

Remote-controlled IEDs or time devices are often used by terrorists to target police and security forces in and outside Quetta and across the restive Balochistan province.

Meanwhile, Balochistan Home Minister Sarfaraz Bugti, talking to media persons, confirmed that the blast was aimed at targeting a VIP figure escorted by security forces. He, however, did not name the person.

On Monday, at least 70 people, most of them lawyers, were killed and many other wounded when a blast occurred outside Quetta civil hospital, triggering a combing operation in the city. – Samaa
