CHITRAL: AT least 31 people were killed and many others went missing when heavy rain and flash floods hit a remote area in Chitral.

According to district Nazim Maghfirat Shah, the floods washed away a mosque and several houses in Drosh village of Chitral.

About the death toll, local administration said at least 31 people, including six of a family, women and children, have died.

Officials said search was underway for many missing in the area.

Pakistan Army and Chitral Levies are carrying out relief activities in the affected areas.

A statement issued by the provincial disaster management authority said 82 houses were affected by the waters, and efforts were underway to provide food and relief items to the villagers.

Another senior local official, Osama Waraich, said that the bodies of eight of the victims from Ursoon had been found on the Afghan side of the border.

Expressing grief and sorrow over the loss of precious lives in the rain and floods, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Iqbal Zafar Jhagra directed the authorities concerned to step up rescue and relief measures.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan have also directed authorities to step up relief measures in the affected areas to provide immediate relief to the needy people.

Separately, two Chinese engineers were killed and five Pakistani workers injured when the roof of a construction site collapsed at Tarbela Dam owing to the rains that began late Saturday, Latifur Rehman, spokesman for the Provincial Disaster Management Authority of northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province said. – Samaa/Agencies
