KARACHI: Elderly pensioners had to endure a scorching heat and power outage for hours as they came to the new branch of National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) in Karachi on Monday.

The pensioners including women and the handicapped thronged the NBP branch to withdraw their pension but they were told to wait as there was no electricity in the bank.

The branch was opened today in Orangi Town.

According to our correspondent, four pensions fell unconscious owing to the hot and humid weather conditions. They were rushed to hospital.

A senior officer of the National Bank was unmoved by the plight of pensioners.

"There are 1.4 pensioners. We cannot deliver pension at homes," Nabeel Saeed, Assistant Vice President of NBP, told SAMAA

"We are introducing bio-metric system, but it is going to take some time," he said. - SAMAA
