KARACHI: Following the confession of murder accused, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) denies any connection with assassination of senior party leader Dr. Imran Farooq who was killed in London in 2010.

MQM’s version came a day after two suspects of the murder – Khalid Shamim and Mohsin Ali – pleaded guilty before a magistrate, admitting their role in the high profile murder.

The third accused Muazzam Ali refused to depose. All the suspects are in custody of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

“MQM is aware of reports in the Pakistani media that individuals held in detention by Pakistani authorities have allegedly confessed to the murder of Dr Imran Farooq. These individuals have allegedly named MQM personnel as having ordered the killing,” MQM said in a statement.

“We categorically state that no party personnel have had anything whatever to do with the tragic death of Dr Farooq. We mourn the loss of a man who was our friend and colleague for many years… MQM welcomes any assistance that may be provided to the British Metropolitan Police,” the statement further said.

Farooq, a founding member of the party, was killed in September 2010 in London.

According to our correspondents, the suspects said in their separate statements that the murder plot was hatched in Pakistan after Farooq was deemed as a threat to MQM leadership.

Khalid Shamim in his statement said the murder was committed on the directives of ‘key figure’ from London who contacted him via telephone.

He said Muazzam Ali, the third accused, acted as a facilitator in the murder of Imran Farooq.

Khalid said Muhammad Anwar, MQM leader in exile, was in constant touch with him. The money to execute the killing was also provided from London, he added. - Samaa
