Alleged controversial statement of MQM’s Tariq Mir surfaces

KARACHI: Reacting to the alleged statement of Tariq Mir—one of the MQM leaders who is reported to have disclosed to British police the facts regarding ‘Indian funding to MQM’, the party said it did not know about the reality of Tariq Mir’s statement.

In its initial response to Tariq Mir's leaked statement given to Britain’s Scotland Yard police, the MQM spokesman noncommittally said the party cannot comment on the statement.

The alleged interview was recorded at Edgware police station on May 30, 2012. The interview lasted for as long as 34 minutes.

It should be mentioned that a couple of days ago a BBC report quoted unknown MQM leaders and accused the party of receiving Indian funding and training.

In his alleged statement, Tariq Mir said, “Altaf Hussain, Muhammed Anwar, Imran Farooq and I were well aware of Indian liaisons.”

He accused India funded MQM for its own vested interests, adding the first meeting with the Indian officials took place in Italy’s city—Rome. However, he said he forgot the time of this meeting.

The fund from India was received for the first time in 1994, the statement says adding Muhammed Anwar was the medium for contacts with India.

Four officials of Indian intelligence agency, the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) used to attend these meetings, he said adding various issues pertaining to Pakistani politics, Afghanistan, Taliban and particularly Karachi situation came under discussion.

“We were informed two days in advance prior to such meetings as this,” he added saying his responsibility included the arrangement regarding air tickets and hotel.

Regarding Altaf Hussain, Tariq Mir stated in his alleged statement that Hussain was aware of the Indian funding, adding that MQM workers were sent to India for training. –SAMAA
