KARACHI: At least 27 suspected criminals were handed over to Rangers on 90-day remand, a day after they were arrested by the paramilitary troops during a raid on MQM headquarters Nine Zero, Samaa reported.

According to Samaa correspondent, the arrested suspects were produced in a local Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) where judge accepted Rangers application for 90-day preventive detention of the suspects.

MQM’s central leader, Amir Khan, was also produced in the court blindfolded among other suspects.

Yesterday, paramilitary Rangers raided MQM office ‘Nine Zero’ and surrounding areas, seizing a “huge quantity” of weapons and arresting several criminals, including one convicted of murdering TV journalist Wali Babar.

The raid sparked an angry response from MQM whose leader Altaf Hussain claimed that the security personnel brought weapons and ammunitions ‘wrapped in blankets’ with them and then claimed recovery from there.

“The operation was conducted on intelligence of presence of hardcore target killers, absconders, criminals and anti-social elements in the area, who were hiding in a virtually no-go area,” according to Rangers statement.

The statement said Pakistan Rangers Sindh acted as per the ruling of Supreme Court and mandate given by the government of Pakistan and managed to arrest target-killers sentenced death penalty by the courts. – Samaa
