Around 49,000 people killed in tribal areas since Sept. 2001: official estimates

Staff ReportISLAMABAD: Around 49,000 people have been killed since September 11, 2001 in restive tribal areas of Pakistan, according to reports submitted by security agencies in the Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday.According to details, secretaries of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and Provincially Administered Tribal Areas (PATA) also submitted their reports about the security situation in tribal areas.Reports said that from 2008 around 15,000 people were killed in these areas. Security agencies conducted a total 608 big and small operations in these areas in addition to over 6,000 search operations.It may be mentioned that the United States and its allies launched operations against al Qaeda – the mastermind of Sept. 11 attacks on the US – in Afghanistan that resulted into a large scale conflict which also spilled over to Pakistani tribal areas. – SAMAA
