Ex-Governor General Ghulam Mohammad’s anniversary today

Staff ReportKARACHI: Former Governor General of Pakistan Ghulam Mohammad is being remembered on his death anniversary today (Wednesday).Ghulam Mohammad was born in Lahore in 1895 and belonged to the Kakazai tribe of Pashtun. He attended Aligarh University after which he worked in the accounting field. After partition, he migrated to Pakistan and became Pakistan’s first Finance Minister from 1947 to 1951. After Liaquat Ali Khan’s assassination in 1951, Khwaja Nazimuddin became the Prime Minister while Ghulam Mohammad became the Governor General from 1951 till 1955. Later on, he first dismissed Khwaja Nazimuddin as Prime Minister replacing him with Mohammed Ali Bogra. In 1954, the constituent assembly tried to change the constitution in order to establish checks on the Governor General’s powers. In response, Ghulam Mohammad dismissed the assembly which was later challenged in court. Ghulam Mohammad emerged victorious when the court upheld his decision in a split decision. His health deteriorated in 1955 and he had to take a leave of absence after which he died on 29th August 1956. –SAMAA
