Hafiz Saeed’s release is a judicial issue: FO

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Ministry spokesman Abdul Basit said on Thursday that the decision to release Hafiz Mohammad Saeed was a judicial one and that the government could not interfere in court matters.

The decision was taken according to the Constitution, he said, adding that the government was going to appeal.

Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, the founder of the Lashkar-e Jhangvi, a banned militant group, was released at the start of the week by the Lahore High Court that said his house arrest was illegal. India expressed dismay over the decision as it blamed Saeed’s organization for being involved in the November 2008 Mumbai attacks.

INDIA AND PAKISTAN

The FO also said that Pakistan wanted talks with India to resume soon but no condition was being attached. “There is no confusion and no compromise on the Kashmir issue. Pakistan is in touch with America for the resolution of the issue,” he added.

On another note, the FO said that Pakistan and France would sign a civil nuclear deal in December. Initial negotiations will be wrapped up in July.

President Asif Ali Zardari will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Moscow. He will visit Brussels to discuss with European leaders access to markets for Pakistani goods. SAMAA
