ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday emphasized that only a cohesive and integrated regional approach was the way forward to defeating extremism and terrorism. The President expressed these views while talking to U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, who called on him here at the at the Aiwan-e-Sadr.
Zardari also emphasised the need to expedite the Kerry-Lugar Bill and Reconstruction Opportunity Zones legislation and the need for working out a joint strategy to counter terrorism.
While welcoming Ambassador Holbrooke's appointment as Special Representative, Zardari said that stability, peace and prosperity of Pakistan was important for peace and stability of the region.
Zardari assured the Special Representative of Pakistan's engagement with the new Administration on the Policy Review that it was undertaking for this region.
Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman, Advisor on Interior Rehman Malik, Advisor on Finance and Economic Affairs Shaukat Tarin and other senior officials attended the meeting.
U.S. Ambassador Anne W. Patterson and other senior U.S. officials accompanying Richard Holbrooke were also present in the meeting. -APP
