ISLAMABAD: France condemned on Thursday in the strongest
terms the murder of Musa Khankhel, Geo television's correspondent in Swat on Wednesday, and urged both media outlets and the Pakistani authorities to ensure the safety of journalists working in the country.
A press release from the French embassy said, “France expresses its sincere
condolences to Musa Khan's family, his friends and to his colleagues.”
The statement mentioned another bombing of the Wana Press Club on the
same day in the South Waziristan Agency, as an example of threats the media community was facing in Pakistan.
“Those unacceptable attacks on the media constitute a serious threat
to the freedom of the media in Pakistan, a principle that is both recognized by the Pakistani constitution and several international conventions,” it said.
“France pays tribute to the outstanding work of Pakistani media, whose
staff is often working in life threatening conditions and assures them of its full support,” the statement said.
