CRIME SCENE SPECIAL REPORT – After 18 months of terror, police wake up to white-car serial rapist

By Khurram Gulzar in Karachi: After at least 60 rapes over one and a half years, the police have arrested a man who had come to be known in Clifton as the ‘white-Corolla wallah’.

Thirty-two-year-old Mohammad Ali Hajiano and his accomplice mechanic Ameer went around Clifton and DHA stopping at gunpoint cars with families. They would then rob them before raping the women in front of the men, who included their fathers, brothers, fiancés and drivers.

Hajiano and Ameer would wear long wigs and would change the number plate on the car after each incident. According to the Clifton police, there wasn’t a single day the men didn’t rape or rob someone. They would then take a Mercedes car with advocate general number plates when they went to sell the valuables.

About eight months ago, about four complaints (not FIRs) were simultaneously registered with the police. All complaints had one thing in common: the attackers were in a white car.
It was only after an influential man’s niece was raped and the chief of police was pressured that a team was formed. It was led by Clifton SP Azad Khan.

On Jan 23, the police found the men parked near Khayaban-e Sehr and an encounter ensued, following which they were arrested.

The Clifton Town police have registered about 40 cases against him. Police fear, however, that the rape numbers are much higher. The exact number of cases will be difficult to ascertain as the women would be unwilling to come forward.

As soon as news started spreading that the ‘white-Corolla wallah’ had been nabbed, people started flooding the police station.

One man who saw him in the lockup said it was good he was arrested. Hajiano is reported to have replied that he would torture that man when he came out.

The police denied the media permission to speak to Hajiano. The investigations officer also declined to appear on camera. He did tell SAMAA however, that Hajiano tried to escape by jumping from the second floor of the Darakhshan police station.

The police have recovered thousands of rupees worth of cash and jewelry, mobile phones, expensive watches and weapons. They are trying to arrest the people who bought the stolen jewelry.

Hajiano has been identified as the son of a retired government employee, Gul Mohammad, who was an executive district officer for education. He is a lawyer at present.

About two years ago, Hajiano was arrested for impersonating an army major to secure the release of some people.

The investigations officer told SAMAA that Hajiano used to take advantage of his father’s connections to promise young women admissions to colleges. He would rape them if they did not consent to sex.
Police sources told SAMAA that a high-ranking employee of a multinational company committed suicide after the women of his family were raped last year.

Hajiano is in jail custody and the police are scheduled to submit the challan on Feb 14.
