ISLAMABAD: Following is the text of President Asif Ali Zardari’s message on Youm-e-Ashur 2009/1430 Hijra.

“My dear countrymen,

Assalam Alaikum Wa Rehmatullah,

Youm-e-Ashur is a significant day in the history, setting an example that has been followed by democratic forces against dictatorship and tyranny in all ages.

The Karbala was in fact the first proper venture against the non-Islamic and non-democratic forces.

This is a day when the grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (peace be upon him) sacrificed his own life along with other family members of the Last Prophet in the fight against oppression. His great sacrifice made the Karbala incident a beacon for entire humanity particularly for the Islamic Ummah.

The history holds the testimony that hundreds of years ago, when a cruel ruler started disgracing Islamic values and tarnished Islamic society, then Hazrat Imam Hussain for the sake of Islam and its great values demonstrated the spirit of undying determination and perseverance, and showed the Ummah that raising voice against oppression and unjustice is the true Islam.

My dear countrymen,

Let us pledge that we will work in the light of Usswa- e-Shabbiri for the promotion of human, democratic and Islamic values, which proves useful for our country’s prosperity and development. We will not tolerate the projection of extremism, barbarism and intolerance.

May Allah Almighty help and guide us all.

Pakistan Paindabad.”
