KPT to be transformed into modern, user-friendly port

KARACHI: Chairperson KPT Nasreen Haq has said
that our vision is to transform the port into a modern,
competitive, user-friendly port and a transshipment hub of the
region.
She stated this while presenting the welcome address on the
occasion of inauguration of Phase III and 10th anniversary of Karachi
International Container Terminal (KICT) by Prime Minister Mohammed
Yousuf Reza Gilani at West Wharf on Saturday evening.
Nasreen Haque said that ever since its inception in 1887 Karachi
Port, being the premier national port has gradually transformed to
facilitate trade requirement of the country.
It has strived to adopt latest trends in this field, she said
adding that presently KPT is pursuing the Land Lord port doctrine
that is to retain the infrastructure and administrative control of the
port facilities and traffic, while 'easing out' the port operations on
a controlled scale to the private sector.
This strategy, she pointed out, has enabled us to compete with
the regional ports and meet the ever growing challenges of the
International and Regional Sea-Trade.
Nasreen Haque said that Karachi Port now has a 11.5 km long, 12 m
deep approach channel. It has 30 dry cargo berths, 13 berths on West
Wharves, 17 on East Wharves and 3 liquid cargo berths for POL and
Non-POL products. This makes a total of 33 berths.
For container handling, she said, KPT has given two concessions
to Terminal Operators – first to Hutchison Port Holdings of Singapore,
who established this first terminal as Karachi International Terminal
in 1998 on these 5 berths at west wharf and this day has marked the
completion of Phase III of this modern container terminal.
She said another terminal, the Pakistan International Container
Terminal, fully owned and operated by Pakistanis was established on 4
berths on East Wharves on BOT in June 2002.
Both these Container Terminals are operating at their peak
performance and have jointly handled over one million containers
during last fiscal year, she said.
