No more heart surgeries for patients in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

April 13, 2019

People in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will now have to leave the province if they need heart surgeries since the only hospital in the province offering the treatment just stopped offering it.

Peshawar’s Lady Reading Hospital no longer offers heart surgeries. It is home to the province’s first and only cardiac ward. The ward is still operational but doctors are no longer allowed to perform heart surgeries. That means patients now have to travel to Sindh or Punjab for treatment.

Doctors had written to the hospital’s administration complaining about a lack of facilities. The letter was the latest in a series of issues between doctors and the administration.

But, instead of providing the facilities the doctors asked for, the administration put an end to heart surgeries at the hospital.

The administration says the move was made in the interest of the patients. It didn’t clarify, however, how the patients are to benefit from this.

Patients already admitted to the hospital’s cardiac ward are at loose ends. They don’t know what to do about their treatment.
