The Burj Khalifa in Dubai lit up on March 22 with an image of New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
PM Ardern has been front and centre in the media after a terrorist attack in Christchurch, New Zealand left 50 Muslims dead. Her empathetic response has garnered praise across the world.
The image projected on the world’s tallest building showed PM Ardern wearing a black headscarf, hugging a relative of one of the victims of the Christchurch attacks. Above it was written ‘Salam Peace’.
The ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Makhtoum, tweeted the picture. New Zealand observed two minutes of silence to remember the victims of the attacks on March 22 before the azaan (the Muslim call to prayer) was broadcast throughout the country.
Prime Minister Imran Khan called his New Zealand counterpart on Friday to express his condolences.
In the wake of the attack, New Zealand has banned automatic and semi-automatic weapons.
