The former secretary general of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, passed away on Saturday at the age of 80.
Annan, a Ghanaian, served as the UN secretary general from 1997 to 2006. He was also a Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
He died at hospital in Bern, Switzerland. The Kofi Annan Foundation announced Annan’s death on Twitter.
“The family kindly requests privacy at this time of mourning,” the statement read. “Arrangements to celebrate his remarkable life will be announced later.
