BIHAR: A 54-year-old barber was the victim of vigilante justice on Friday when a panchayat handed out a verdict according to which he was beaten with slippers by the women and forced to lick his own saliva.
An investigation into the matter revealed that the barber had ventured into the house of the sarpanch–the village head–while there were no members of the male family present inside.
“He perhaps went to the house of sarpanch on Wednesday evening for tobacco when no male member was present,” Nalanda DM SM Thyiagrajan told a leading Indian English daily. “The victim has confirmed the incident. A thorough inquiry has been ordered and action will be taken on the report received.”
The infuriated sarpanch convened a meeting in which it was decided to have the barber beaten with slippers by women and have him lick his spit.
The punishment was doled out to Mahesh Thakur, the 54-year-old barber.
People on social media condemned the incident and spoke out against the vigilante justice, calling for punishment of the sarpanch and his devotees who had participated in the attack.
Police have booked eight people in a case pertaining to the thrashing of the barber.
