Turkey estimates up to 1,000 dead in quake

ISTANBUL: Turkey's Kandilli Observatory estimates that some 500 to 1,000 people were killed in a powerful earthquake in southeast Turkey's Van province on Sunday. Separately, Deputy Prime Minister Besir Atalay told reporters some 10 buildings had collapsed in Van city and around 25-30 buildings collapsed in the nearby district of Ercis.The quake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.2 struck eastern Turkey Sunday, collapsing buildings and causing a number of deaths, officials said.The Red Crescent says its rescuers have pulled out several injured people out of the collapsed dormitory in Ercis.The U.S. Geological Survey says its preliminary measurements say an earthquake that has struck eastern Turkey was of magnitude 7.3.Its epicenter was in the village of Tabanli in eastern Van province, bordering Iran.
