Viewers of the state-run PTV’s official YouTube channel were put in an awkward spot when they found that the channel had been shut down due to repeated copyright infringements.

There is little that needs to be said about PTV’s ratings, and it is common knowledge that subscriptions to PTV’s YouTube channel have increased manifold since Prime Minister Imran Khan directed the channel to show Ertugrul Ghazi. The number of subscribers is currently 4.77 million.

A few days ago, Turkish media said in a tweet that Ertugrul Ghazi has achieved record breaking popularity in Pakistan. The first episode was watched 12 million times in six years in Turkish, while it hit the same number of views in Arabic in a single year. In Urdu however, the episode gathered 42 million views in a single month.

The state broadcaster operates multiple YouTube channels called Sports, National, Global and News. However, PTV Home is perhaps the most important of them all because it publishes entertainment content and TV shows.

Recently, PTV Home’s channel was shut down by a private company called Dot Republic. The company can shut down any channel after three strikes of copyright or digital rights violation.

According to Dot Republic, PTV’s YouTube channel was shut down as it did not have the digital rights for two drama serials: Mein Jeena Chahti Hoon and Jaanbaz.

When contacted, controller PTV Masood Akbar declined to comment on the matter saying it is not under his management. He also said he did not know who is responsible for the matter.

SAMAA Digital also tried to contact Managing Director Amir Manzoor but got no response.

Another PTV office bearer said that the YouTube channel was shut down because PTV showed one or two dramas without obtaining copyrights. He said that it is common that some drama is shown on PTV while simultaneously being shown on another satellite channel.

“In such cases PTV does not hold the rights to the show and faces a strike down. The same happened this time,” the official said, “and YouTube authorities will be contacted after Eid holidays to resolve the matter”.

So what happened after the first episode of Ertugrul was aired?

The official said that PTV faced a strike right after the first episode of Ertugrul was aired because of a copyright issue and this is why a separate channel called TRT Ertgrul by PTV was created.

This is why when you search for PTV Home, YouTube shows that it has been removed but Ertugrul can be viewed on the new channel.
