The Ali Brothers- Maulana Shaukat Ali (left) and Maulana Mohammad Ali Johar (right). The Ali Brothers were Indian Muslim activists and two of the most prominent leading figures of the Khilafat Movement. The Khilafat Movement was a pan-Islamist political protest launched in order to restore the Khalifa (who was sanctioned and repressed by Britain and her allies) in the Ottoman Khalifat from 1919-1922/24. What is famous about this movement is that although there was a global support for the Khilafat from among the Muslims world-wide, pre-partition India was the most active and prominent in support of the cause. The Khilafat Movement was not only supported by the Muslims in India, rather Mohandas Gandhi also encouraged mass support for the Khilafat Movement and intertwined it with the aim for Swaraj (home-rule). The Khilafatists became a big part of India’s non-cooperation movement against the British during that time. The peaceful mix of both movements encouraged Hindu-Muslim unity at the time as well as they both worked collectively. Their efforts against the British led to both the Ali Brothers as well Gandhi being imprisoned by the British authorities. . .
