KARACHI: Unknown gunmen riding motorbikes opened fire on a car in Karachi on Wednesday, killing famed Sufi singer Amjad Sabri, officials and family said.

The deadly attack took place in Liaquatabad area of the city.

According to eyewitnesses , Amjad Sabri was left critically wounded after the attack. He was rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where he died from his wounds.

Speaking to SAMAA, Amjad Sabri’s assistant and his brother confirmed that the legendary qawwal was no more.

Amjad Sabri was targeted as he drove out of his home in Liaquatabad to leave for a Ramadan transmission.

An eyewitness who was on the crime scene said that one gunman fired five shots on Amjad Sabri sahab near Lalo Khait No 10 in Liaquatabad.

“Amjad Sabri was still alive when I identified him and he remained there for 15 to 20 minutes before being shifted to hospital,” he said, adding that many people were gathered there after the shooting.

The deceased was the son of legendary qawwal Ghulam Farid Sabri.

Speaking to SAMAA shortly after the shooting, Sindh Home Minister Suhail Anwar Sial strongly condemned the assassination of Amjad Sabri and expressed sympathy with his family.

He said that a meeting was immediately convened to discuss the law and order situation. The Sindh government was trying its level best to maintain law and order in the city, he added.


In his address to the National Assembly, senior MQM leader Dr Farooq Sattar quoted Amjad Sabri saying that he was receiving threats from a political group for his refusal to attend their program.

In a press statement, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif condemned the shocking murder of Amjad Sabri and directed law enforcement agencies to apprehend his killer.

The deceased will be laid to rest on Thursday in Karachi’s Paposhnagar graveyard after his funeral prayers at Liaquatabad mosque.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to attend his funeral.

A spokesman for Sindh Police said that the Station House Officer (SHO) of Sharifabad had been removed from his post after the incident.

Governor Sindh Dr.Ishrat ul Ebad Khan contacted Director General of Rangers Sindh, Maj. Gen. Bilal Akbar, and IGP A.D. Khawaja separately.

He directed that every step should be taken for the arrest of killers.  The Governor described the killing as a conspiracy to spoil the peace in Karachi. – SAMAA

    Great loss indeed. According to media Amjad Sabri also reported to police couple of days ago. Ch Nisar and the provincial home minister should immediately resign. Mr Bilawal please send your interior minister home and Mr. Nawaz Sharif please wake up and send Ch Nisar home.
