Pakistan should manufacture cellphones, says PTI senator

August 7, 2018

Pakistan should manufacture cell phones to save $1 billion the country spends annually on the import of mobile devices, Senator Shibli Faraz of the PTI said in Tuesday.

The senator heads a special committee of the Senate on circular debt.

“Pakistan spends $1 billion annually on the import of mobile phones. This is a luxury. We should make a policy for manufacturing cellphones at home,” he demanded at a meeting of the committee on Tuesday.

There are at least 150.24 million mobile phone users in Pakistan.

Neighbouring India is the second largest mobile phone producer in the world after China.

In July, Samsung Electronics opened the world’s largest mobile phone manufacturing plant in India.
