LAHORE: Punjab Agriculture Minister Dr. Farrukh Javed said on Sunday that government imposed a ban on potato import and waved off duty on its export in farmers' interest.

During his visit to Seed Plant and Corn Research Institute Sahiwal, he said that farmers would now get good prices for their commodity as a little increase in potato prices would be seen in open market.

The Provincial Minister said that punishment for fake pesticides, seed and medicine producers was being increased, and on the Punjab Chief Minister's directives, a massive crackdown was started against fake medicine and pesticides.

He said that record production of wheat, cotton and rice was seen due to farmer-friendly policies of the government as well as utmost efforts of the farmers.

Dr. Farrukh Javed said that Agriculture Department was focusing on introducing new seed varieties for better productivity at low cost, and it was also serious in retrieving its land from grabbers. The government was increasing its research budget for better productivity in agriculture sector, he maintained.

Punjab Seed Corporation's Joint Director Chaudhry Muhammad Anwar and the Research Institute's Director Mian Muhammad Shafiq briefed the minister on their performance and latest research work. -APP
