People pulling off good work, regardless of their field, should be honored and acknowledged with awards, says actor Mehwish Hayat.

The Karachi girl, who shot to fame through her thespian talents, said this while reacting to intense criticism poured in on social media after the federal government announced to give her the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, an excellence award on Pakistan Day. The list of award winners ranges from actors and singers to television anchors.

“I’m an artist. It is not necessary that my work fascinates every single person who views it. I’m criticised as well. There is no harm in it. But, criticism that serves no other purpose than criticism itself, should be avoided,” Hayat told SAMAA Digital.

“People, who are subjecting me to critique, should understand that the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz is not owned by a certain private brand. Instead, it’s the government’s. An entire team of professionals is involved in brainstorming the process.”

She said the government has several committees for the purpose. They prepare the list of the recipients of the awards and the process culminates with the president of the state signing it, she said.

The Load Wedding actress said the learning process continues every single day. “I didn’t deprive anyone of their right. I support an award to everyone who is putting in good work,” she said.

Getting the excellence award is a great honor for me, she said. I’m so happy and excited that I can’t express it in words, she pointed out.

Hayat is facing criticism over social media ever since the government announced giving her the country’s fourth highest civil honor – Tamgha-e-Imtiaz. Meanwhile, stars from the country’s showbiz circles, including Humayun Saeed, Mahira Khan, Armina Rana Khan, Fahad Mustafa, Shahzad Roy, Ushna Shah and Shan, assured the actress of their support.

President Dr Arif Alvi will confer the honor on Hayat during the main ceremony to celebrate Pakistan Day.

One of the Quotes from many media blogs and social media…
“We feel ashamed as a nation that our authorities may choose to select the likes of Mehwish Hayat for the presidential award, which is supposed to be given to those who served our country & made Pakistan proud. What has she done except revealed pounds of flesh & sold ounces of any integrity through vulgar displays of her character! Why not those women of substance serving national interests even in the entertainment industry who starred in epic productions viewable across the board, by the families of masses, with lasting impressions not fracturing our shared moral values.
Why not hundreds of women who are in social sector, in development sector and improving the lives of thousands of Pakistanis? Imagine her standing with the widows of Shaheeds and great scientists and academia who bother to come in a decent attire in such award ceremonies. Beides wondering what “performance” or participation in a national cause”, earn her this eligibility people are wondering what she will put on to be presentable, she probably doesn’t have a single decent modest attire.
Sadly enough even if she gets the award, it will be weighing heavily on her as a bad decision of the usual clan of “enlightened socialites”, widely rejected by the national opinion.
