Captain Marvel is not releasing in Pakistan yet but it isn’t because of India

A local distributor is negotiating with Disney to bring Captain Marvel to Pakistan

Pakistani fans won’t be able to watch one of the most anticipated films of the year, Captain Marvel, in cinemas but it isn’t because of India.

According to Cinepax cinemas, the film, which opened on March 8 across the world, will not be releasing in Pakistan as Disney’s regional office did not give Pakistan the rights to run it.

“We don’t have any further information on this, however, work to bring in Captain Marvel is being done. It cannot be specified at the moment whether other Disney movies will be coming to Pakistan or not,” Cinepax told SAMAA Digital.

Nevertheless, fans were quick to blame India for Disney’s refusal. Social media users claimed that Disney’s South Asia Regional Office is in India and that it is being run by a man named Mahesh Samat, which might be the reason why Pakistan didn’t get the rights to distribute the film.

“The speculation of Captain Marvel not being released in Pakistan because Disney’s South Asia Regional Office is in India is baseless,” Nadeem Mandviwalla told SAMAA Digital. He is the head of Mandviwalla Entertainment, one of Pakistan’s biggest film importers, distributors, and exhibitors.

“The office is indeed in India but this can never be the reason why Disney is not giving Pakistan the rights to run Captain Marvel,” he said.

“The negotiations to bring Disney’s movie Captain Marvel to Pakistan are taking place,” said Eveready Group of Companies General Manager Aziz Pasha. Eveready Pictures is the local distributor for Disney movies and obtains the rights to the movies. It then gives movies to local cinemas to screen for audiences.

“However the case is that some other distribution company has offered Disney three times the money we pay to import the film to Pakistan. Now, Disney wants us to make a higher offer in order to take the film,” he said.

“We have been importing Disney movies to Pakistan for the past five years, and the negotiations will likely be settled at the earliest,” said Pasha. He said if the negotiations are successful, they will be able to screen Captain Marvel in Pakistan.

Captain Marvel is one of the most anticipated films of the year and the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Captain Marvel is expected to play a crucial role in the completion of the Avengers’ saga.

Disney’s Avengers: End Game is releasing next month on April 24  and we will have to see whether Eveready or another group gets the rights to screen it in Pakistan. Pasha said they will also negotiate for the movie when the time comes.

Captain Marvel was scheduled to release in Pakistan on March 15.

What a sad situation. Hope this does not happen with the most anticipated film of the year, Avengers Endgame. Clean your stuff up Everready, Time is at the earliest and you’re losing billions of rupees everyday.

A very sorry state of affairs. I always believed that our companies in relation to distribution are much wiser and professional than the bloody Indian monopoly to get good movies like captain marvel and avengers endgame. Disney people are idiots if they are tipsy with Indian monopoly our companies should go for independent territory rights for Pakistan.

      What’s an “independent territory rights”?

Forget about knowing the “A-B-C-D” of media commerce — are you even hearing yourself?

This has NO-THING to do with geopolitics as save for rescinding the “Most Favoured Nation” privilege, the central government hasn’t done anything offically, yet. Let alone sanctions.

who the heck is Mahesh Samat and who gives him the right to make a decision for Pakistan

    • Maaz Kalim  April 1, 2019 2:19 pm/ Reply

‘Dear’ “Hinduphobe”, Mr Samat is the 2-time once resigned employee of Disney® India and then, Disney® South[east] Asia.

His position in the company should be best understood as a CEO. Anything else?

Because unlike your compatriots fanning rumours over his name all Thanks to his presumed religious-affiliation (just like their “friends” in Indian nationalism), he’s a “Baniya” (businessperson) first and anything else, later. Disney® won’t tolerate an executive who makes collateral damages due to political-issues and deliberately costs lacs of PKRs in opportunity-costs. So, give it a rest, huh?
At last, need I spell-out “who the […] gives him the right to make a decision for territories under his domain?” or just like you learned to swear with cliché words in English, your virtual-“Madrassa” education has at least enlightened you with chain-of-command in Occidental Corporate culture?

Because in any case, AFAIK — would it still be relevant if I open your eyes to yet-another enlightenment that he has been demoted to a new role for Asia Pacific region? Nope, ostensibly not as a “retribution” — and certainly not over a single release in a single country when Disney® is much more than just movies, anyways. But in an ostensible preparation for the mega-integration. He’s most likely to be replaced by Mr Uday Shankar (nothing to do with a legendary dancer), a yet-another “Hindu” executive who rose through the ranks — once the transfer becomes effective.

Well i don’t care Because it’s most criticized Marvel disney movie on internet and it has stupid action scenes and slow paced story the character is boring it’s not like Captain America according to trailer i watched so chill Pakistanis it’s not a important movie and i know it’s an indian propaganda so no worries they deserve this kind of boring movie and by the way We Have Avengers End Game and Spiderman Far from home like movie’s etc And most important we have DC Movies upcoming so no worries

    • TheWiseGuy  March 16, 2019 7:19 pm/ Reply

You must be so mindless. Captain Marvel is an integral part of both Endgame and the MCU in its entirety. You’re saying that we should not worry about this and look forward to upcoming movies? Mind my language as I cant control my anger but you must be so so stupid cause Captain Marvel, Endgame and Far From Home are all Disney movies so if Captain Marvel doesnt get released, neither will the rest. You’re welcome.

      • NotSoWiseGuy  March 18, 2019 12:52 pm/ Reply

Far from home’s distributor is Sony not Disney. so we will definitely get that one.

      “Marvel disney[sic]:” Eh??!

Now, what on Earth does that even mean?

More clarifications will be solicited later.

I am.l a huge fan of Marvel movies. I truly hoped that Captain Marvel will get released eventually but decided not to wait anymore and watched it yesterday. I don’t watch movies until master print is released either but this time Won’t get one before Avengers Endgame.
I hope everything sorts out till then and at least future movies get released in Pakistan.
However, we should remember these are just some movies made by and distributed by people to earn money and we the audience get some entertainment along the way. Be calm and go and watch the movies that are available and you can watch these later when the digital and DVDs etc. get released.
I hope everyone gets my point.
