ARY Digital has taken a cue from Netflix and changed the way it presents its weekly dramas. It is moving towards catering to people’s need to binge watch.
If you watch Pakistani drama serials on TV, you know that entertainment channels always show dramas from 8pm to 9pm.
This is the scheduling formula that Pakistan has been following since the days when there was only one channel: PTV.
Now, ARY Digital is showing two back-to-back episodes for three shows – Khasara on Mondays, Bay Dardi on Tuesdays and Meri Gurya on Thursdays.
The channel is moving towards the Netflix way of doing things. Netflix allows users to binge watch TV shows and has all of the show’s episodes available so viewers don’t need to wait a whole week to find out what has happened to their favourite characters.
Right now, people watch Pakistani drama episodes on YouTube.
When the back-to-back episodes are uploaded on YouTube, they get around a million views in a single day. In comparison, the regular 40 minute episodes get around half that many views.
ARY Digital started using this method a few months ago. Before, channels used to re-air old episodes that had become popular with new ones.
