Happy 69th Birthday Hema Malini

Hema Malini is one of those actors who doesn’t age; they become more graceful with the passage of time. She made her debut in the late 60s while has been active on the scene since with occasional breaks to concentrate on her political career. On her 69th Birthday, let’s take a look at Bollywood’s Dream Girl and the way she transformed over the years.

In the 1960s, Hema Malini did a couple of flicks that established her as a rising star; Waris (1968 with Jeetendra) and Jahan Pyar Mile (1969 with Shashi Kapoor) made the audience aware of a young girl who had the looks of a diva and could dance her heart out, be it Eastern or Western dances.

The 1970s saw her become the Dream Girl of Bollywood; every actor wanted to work with her and a few were even interested in marrying her – Sanjeev Kumar and Dharmendra. She starred in all the big-budget films of the era including Andaaz, Johnny Mera Naam, Seeta Aur Geeta, Sholay, Trishul to name a few. From Shammi Kapoor to Dev Anand, Rajendra Kumar to Sanjeev Kumar, Dharmendra to Shashi Kapoor, Feroz Khan to Hema Malini paired with all and came out as a winner.

Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini had acted in a couple of films in the 1970s but it was in the 1980s that the two took their pairing to a new level. With Satte Pe Satta, Naseeb, Desh Premee and Nastik, they became invincible. Other actors also worked with Hema Malini who despite being in his 30s was the fascination of the whole nation. It was during this decade that she married Dharmendra, who was a star in his own right.

In the 90s, Hema Malini moved to character roles, and although she didn’t look like any leading man’s mother, she played it convincingly. Being a trained classical dancer, she continued to film songs with grace and a few songs including those from Baaghban (2003), Veer – Zaara (2004) and Laaga Chunari Main Daag (2007) are proof of her ageless beauty. She was 59 when she filmed the Ehi Thaiyya Motiya song, and many people from the new generation couldn’t believe that she was nearing 60!
