The King of Pop in Pakistan – Alamgir – celebrates his 62nd Birthday and no one can be happier than his fans. For those who don’t know, Alamgir sang a few film songs earlier in his career before turning full throttle to pop singing and inspiring generations of musicians and singers. Let’s take a look at some of his filmi and non filmi songs to join in the celebrations.
Hum Chalay To Hamare – Jagir
This song has an interesting history – Music composer Nisar Bazmi chose Alamgir after the rest of the playback singers refused to sing for him due to his issues with powerful people in the industry. Alamgir rescued his mentor and the song is still popular even after 4 decades.
Tum Meri Zindagi Ho – Mom Ki Gudya
Robin Ghosh used Alamgir in a couple of his films including this one in which Alamgir sings with Mehnaz for Ghulam Mohiuddin and Shabnam. His voice for suited for the number as Gullu played a pop singer in the film!
Mujhe Dil Se – Aaina
Alamgir won a Nigar Award for his rendition of this Robin Ghosh classic and the song remains the most popular one of his career to date.
Waada Karo Saajna – Aaina
Its Ja Ja Jani time with this song which was way ahead of its time when it was released years back. Alamgir and Mehnaz again collaborate to bring a modern day classic!
Jeewan Hai Apna – Khush Naseeb
Alamgir made a comeback to playback singing in mid-80s with this song that was filmed on the roads of Karachi – do try to pick out places that are still there in the metropolis!
Yeh Shaam Aur Tera Naam
Alamgir was on top of his game in the 70s when Colour TV was introduced in the country. Most of his songs from that era are still popular after 40 years including this one!
Sona Sona Jeevan Apna
Alamgir wasn’t just good with the pop songs; he proved his worth with slow numbers including this one.
Kabhi Tum Idhar Se
Alamgir immortalized the lyrics of recently departed Hasan Akbar Kamal by singing this song on TV.
Maine Tumhari Gaagar Se
It was PTV Awards in 1987 that Alamgir danced and performed on his famous song and won the award for Best Singer!
Dekha Na Tha
This song was first sung on TV, later was included in the film Bobby & Julie and finally came full circle Alamgir sang it for the third time on TV in 1991.
Tum Hi Se Aye Mujahidon
Alamgir sang many patriotic songs on TV but this one raises the bar high as it was brilliantly shot and well-written. ‘Shaheed ki jo maut hai’ has become one of the most quoted phrases of last 25 years!
Keh Dena featuring Kristie Yung
Alamgir is settled abroad but still features in Official Soundtracks of TV series such as in Mangoes by Suharwardy Brothers.
