More than three decades after Khal Nayak became a defining Bollywood hit, Sanjay Dutt has announced the return of his iconic character “Ballu.”
The actor revealed that the upcoming project will revisit the legacy of the original film in a new and updated form.
The original Khal Nayak (1993) became a cultural milestone, turning its anti-hero into one of Bollywood’s most memorable characters.
Now, Sanjay Dutt is bringing the character back in a project titled Khal Nayak Returns, describing it as a “fresh interpretation” rather than a direct sequel.
First look and announcement
Dutt shared his first look from the film on Instagram, showcasing a rugged and intense appearance.
“Har kahaani ka ek waqt hota hai… aur uska waqt aa gaya hai. Khalnayak Returns,” he wrote, teasing the comeback.

He also officially announced the project at an event in Mumbai, where the teaser was unveiled.
How the idea was born
The actor revealed that the idea for revisiting Khal Nayak first came to him during his time in jail.
He said he once asked fellow inmates if they would be interested in watching the story again. According to him, around 4,000 inmates responded positively.
“They all said they would,” he shared, adding that he asked them to write one page each about it, later reading all 4,000 pages.
Collaboration with Subhash Ghai
Dutt later shared the idea with original director Subhash Ghai, who helmed the 1993 classic.
Ghai supported the concept, calling it a reflection of Dutt’s “inner wish and passion.”
“The journey of Khalnayak has been long… He is a legend and a man of entertainment,” Ghai said, adding his confidence in the project’s success.
The original Khal Nayak starred Jackie Shroff and Madhuri Dixit alongside Sanjay Dutt.
Released in the 1990s, it became one of the most influential films of its era, especially known for its portrayal of a complex anti-hero.
