Anthropic has begun rolling out a voice mode capability for its AI coding assistant, Claude Code.

The update signals a push toward more conversational, hands-free coding workflows for developers.

The feature was announced Tuesday by Thariq Shihipar, an engineer at Anthropic, in a post on X.

According to Shihipar, voice mode is currently live for about 5% of users, with a broader rollout expected in the coming weeks.

The limited release suggests Anthropic is testing performance and user experience before expanding access globally.

How voice mode works

Voice mode is designed to streamline the coding process by allowing developers to interact with Claude Code using spoken commands.

To activate it, users can type /voice to toggle the feature on and then issue a spoken instruction. Claude Code will then execute the request.

For example, a developer can say, “refactor the authentication middleware,” and the assistant will process the command accordingly.

The goal is to reduce manual input and create a more fluid coding workflow.

Questions around limitations and partnerships

Despite the launch, several details remain unclear.

Anthropic has not specified whether there are limits on voice interactions, technical constraints, or usage caps tied to the new feature.

It is also unknown whether the voice capability was developed in partnership with a third-party AI voice provider such as ElevenLabs, with whom Anthropic was reportedly in talks.

The company has not responded to requests for comment from TechCrunch regarding these questions.

The rollout builds on Anthropic’s earlier introduction of Voice Mode for its flagship chatbot, Claude, launched last May.

That update allowed users to interact with the model through voice for general-purpose tasks, signaling the company’s broader commitment to conversational AI interfaces.

Bringing similar functionality to Claude Code extends that vision into the developer ecosystem.

Competition in the AI coding market

The AI coding assistant space remains highly competitive.

Major players including GitHub Copilot from Microsoft, Cursor, Google, and OpenAI are all competing for developer adoption.

However, Claude Code has emerged as one of the most widely adopted tools in the market.

In February, Anthropic reported that Claude Code’s run-rate revenue surpassed $2.5 billion, more than doubling since the start of 2026. The company also noted that weekly active users have doubled since January.

Meanwhile, Claude’s mobile app has experienced rapid growth.

The spike followed Anthropic’s decision to refuse allowing the U.S. Department of Defense to use its AI systems for domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons.

In the aftermath, the Claude app climbed to the top of the U.S. App Store charts, overtaking ChatGPT in rankings.
