The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has commenced exercises titled ‘Smart Control of the Strait of Hormuz’ in the strategic waterway.
According to the Iranian news agency, the joint drills are under the supervision and field monitoring of IRGC Commander Major General Mohammad Pakpour.
The report said that the principal objectives of the war games include assessing the operational preparedness of the Revolutionary Guards Navy units, reviewing plans for military response in the event of potential security and military threats in the Strait of Hormuz, and ensuring effective use of Iran’s geographical and strategic position in the Gulf and the Sea of Oman.
The announcement of the naval exercises in the Strait of Hormuz comes at a time when US President Donald Trump has indicated the possibility of dispatching another aircraft carrier to the Middle East.
