A sweeping reform drive has been launched in the Punjab Police, marking what officials describe as a new era of accountability and public service.
The special project, initiated under the direction of the Punjab chief minister, aims to transform police culture, improve conduct, and rebuild public trust.
Under the new directives, citizens visiting police stations, offices, and checkpoints will be addressed respectfully as “sir” and “madam.”
Strict action will be taken against officers and officials who misbehave with the public or fail to listen to complaints. Clear rules and regulations have been set to ensure courteous conduct becomes standard practice.
Officials say the goal is to change long-standing perceptions about police behaviour and promote a service-oriented approach.
Misconduct and corruption
Authorities have warned that strict action will be taken against officers found guilty of corruption, misuse of authority, or immoral conduct.
Excess of authority and unethical behaviour will not be tolerated. The restructuring of the accountability system is designed to ensure officers are answerable for their actions.
In a major technological upgrade, the entire Punjab Police force will be equipped with cameras within the next two months.
All operations, including raids, will be recorded to ensure transparency and prevent misuse of power. Additionally, cameras installed at all police stations will become fully operational.
Live monitoring will be conducted directly from the Central Police Office, enabling senior officials to oversee activities in real time.
Panic buttons and complaint mechanism
To empower citizens further, panic buttons will be installed outside police stations. These will allow individuals to register complaints related to police misconduct instantly.
A comprehensive strategy has also been developed to end the tradition of delays in registering cases and carrying out investigations — a longstanding public grievance.
In a significant move, Punjab Inspector General of Punjab Abdul Karim has personally begun contacting petitioners and applicants by phone.
This direct engagement is aimed at ensuring complaints are addressed promptly and that citizens feel heard at the highest level.
Officials claim that the restructuring of the accountability framework will not only improve the delivery of justice but also restore public confidence in the police force.
With strict oversight, digital monitoring, and citizen-focused reforms, the Punjab Police leadership says the initiative marks the beginning of a transformative phase in law enforcement across the province.
