Facebook is rolling out a fresh wave of AI-powered features aimed at making the platform more expressive and engaging.
The updates, announced Tuesday, include animated profile pictures, photo-restyling tools, and dynamic backgrounds for text posts.
Facebook on Tuesday unveiled new artificial intelligence tools designed to help users express themselves in more playful and creative ways.
The updates include animated profile photos, AI-driven photo restyling for Stories and Memories, and animated backgrounds for text-based posts.
As Meta works to keep its flagship app relevant — particularly among younger users — the company appears to be focusing on personalization and creative self-expression to appeal to Gen Z.
Animated profile pictures
One of the key additions is animated profile pictures.
The feature applies motion effects to static images, making subjects appear to wave, form a heart shape, or even wear a virtual party hat.
For best results, Facebook recommends uploading a clear photo of a single person facing the camera. Users can select images directly from their camera roll or choose existing photos already uploaded to the platform.
Meta says more animation styles will be introduced throughout the year.
AI “restyle” tool for stories and memories
Facebook is also upgrading its Stories and Memories features with a new AI tool called “Restyle.”
Stories are short photo and video posts that disappear after 24 hours, while Memories resurfaces posts shared on the same date in previous years.
With Restyle, users can upload a photo to Stories or select a Memory and tap the feature to transform the image using Meta AI.
Users can either type a custom prompt or choose from preset themes such as anime, illustrated, glowy, or ethereal.
The tool also allows adjustments to mood, lighting, and color tones. Additionally, users can swap backgrounds, replacing them with scenes like a beach or a cityscape.
The update aims to make visual content more interactive and personalized.
Animated bckgrounds for text posts
To enhance simple text posts, Facebook is gradually rolling out animated backgrounds.
By tapping the rainbow “A” icon, users can choose from still or animated scenes, including falling leaves or rolling ocean waves.
The company has also confirmed that seasonal backgrounds will be added soon.
With around 2.1 billion daily active users, Facebook remains one of the largest social media platforms globally.
However, in recent years, the company has faced challenges in attracting and retaining younger audiences.
To address this, Meta has embraced artificial intelligence and introduced a more youthful redesign of the app.
Recent updates include a friends-only feed and the option to use unique display names within Groups, similar to Reddit’s community-based usernames.
The platform is also reviving its poke feature by launching a dedicated button on user profiles that sends notifications when someone “pokes” another user.
