The United States has voiced opposition to Israel’s recent moves to expand control over the occupied West Bank, as global condemnation grows.
President Donald Trump’s administration emphasized that a stable West Bank is vital for Israel’s security and the broader peace process.
A White House official said on Monday that Trump opposes Israel’s annexation plans, framing the move as destabilizing to both Israel and Palestinian territories. “A stable West Bank keeps Israel secure, and is in line with this administration’s goal to achieve peace in the region,” the official told Reuters.
The comment comes after Israeli far-right ministers Bezalel Smotrich and Israel Katz announced measures expanding Israeli authority in the West Bank, including facilitating land acquisition for settlements—actions considered illegal under international law.
International condemnation mounts
Eight Muslim-majority countries—Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and the UAE—denounced Israel’s move, calling it an attempt to impose “unlawful Israeli sovereignty” and accelerate annexation while displacing Palestinians.
The United Nations, led by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, also criticized the measures. UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the decisions are “destabilising” and undermine a two-state solution, warning they limit Palestinian control over their own destiny.
European nations, including the United Kingdom and Spain, echoed the condemnation. The UK urged Israel to reverse its decisions immediately, stating that any unilateral attempt to alter Palestinian territories is “wholly unacceptable” and violates international law.
Controversial measures in focus
The Israeli measures include transferring authority over building permits in Hebron—the largest West Bank city under occupation—from the Palestinian Authority to Israel. They also increase Israeli control over two significant religious sites: Rachel’s Tomb near Bethlehem and the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron.
Smotrich defended the actions, claiming they “deepen roots in all regions of the Land of Israel and bury the idea of a Palestinian state.” Spain warned that these steps could spark renewed violence in Gaza and threaten ongoing peace and ceasefire efforts.
