Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi said on Sunday that if Shaheen Shah Afridi is unable to take wickets, the team management must consider giving another player an opportunity.
Speaking on Samaa TV programme Zor Ka Jor, the former Pakistan captain shared his views on Pakistan’s ongoing campaign in the T20 World Cup 2026. Afridi said senior players must guide the team according to the match situation. He praised India’s Suryakumar Yadav for playing a fine innings as captain.
He has termed Pakistan’s upcoming match against the United States as a tough contest, while maintaining that Pakistan would still start as favourites.
Afridi said run rate plays a decisive role in tournament progress, adding that Pakistan did not appear to plan for finishing matches early. He maintained that winning by a large margin has a significant impact on net run rate, and that strong teams do not allow weaker sides a chance to recover.
The former captain said the next match would be extremely important and stressed that every player’s performance matters. He said the team requires solid contributions from at least nine to 10 players out of the 11.
Afridi said decisions would need to be taken regarding batting positions at number four and five. He added that a batter like Khawaja Nafay can score 20 to 22 runs off 10 balls when used properly.
He said Pakistan’s middle order has been facing difficulties for a long time and reiterated that a team cannot rely on one or two players alone, as everyone has an equal role.
Afridi said he has always wanted Babar Azam to become a match-winner, but added that if a player is unable to deliver despite extensive experience, others should be given a chance. He said responsibility comes with the length of time a player has represented the side.
