Apple introduced a square 1:1 sensor for the front-facing camera on its iPhone 17 series, and rumors suggest other smartphone makers may follow.
Tipster Digital Chat Station claims that Huawei and Oppo are testing square sensors for upcoming devices.
Huawei could debut the square selfie sensor on its mid-range, camera-focused smartphones, potentially the Nova 16 series, while Oppo may integrate the feature into its flagship Find X10 series. Reports indicate that Oppo’s implementation could surpass Apple’s in terms of features.
The iPhone 17’s 18MP front camera uses the square sensor to support auto zoom and allows users to shoot in both portrait and landscape orientations seamlessly, without rotating the device.
If Huawei and Oppo adopt similar sensors, it could become a new trend in smartphone selfie photography, offering greater flexibility and improved framing for users.
