The parliamentary process for the Federal Budget 2026-27 has formally begun, with the National Assembly Secretariat initiating consultations on the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) for the upcoming financial year.
The National Assembly Secretariat has sent an official letter to all ministries, divisions, and the heads of National Assembly standing committees. The letter seeks detailed proposals related to the PSDP for the next financial year as part of the early stages of budget preparation.
According to the communication, the proposals will form the basis of parliamentary scrutiny before being incorporated into the federal budget framework.
Ministries directed to submit PSDP proposals
The letter has been addressed to the secretaries of all federal ministries as well as the chairpersons of the standing committees. Ministries and divisions have been directed to submit their PSDP proposals to the relevant standing committees by tomorrow.
The National Assembly Secretariat has emphasized that budget proposals should be shared promptly to allow sufficient time for examination and review.
Standing committees to review, suggest amendments
Once received, the standing committees will review the PSDP proposals submitted by the ministries. During this process, committees are expected to suggest necessary amendments and improvements to ensure alignment with development priorities and legislative oversight.
The recommendations prepared by the standing committees will play a key role in shaping the final development allocations.
Deadline set for recommendations
The standing committees have been instructed to finalize their recommendations related to the PSDP by March 1. After completion, these recommendations will be forwarded to the Ministry of Finance.
The Ministry of Finance will then consider these inputs for inclusion in the Federal Budget 2026-27, marking a critical step in the budget-making process.
