Iran’s former prime minister Mir Hossein Mousavi has told the country’s clerical leadership that their rule has reached its end, according to a report published by Iranian opposition news platform Kaleme.
In a statement attributed to Mousavi, who has been under house arrest since 2011, he said the authorities must relinquish power, declaring that the “game is over”.
The statement termed the recent crackdown on protests as a “black page in the history of our nation”, calling it a grave betrayal and a crime against the people.
Mousavi has asked the leadership to abandon force and step aside, saying the nation itself should be allowed to guide the country towards freedom and prosperity.
It is pertinent to note that Mousavi served as Iran’s last prime minister from 1981 to 1989, before the position was abolished under a new constitution. He was placed under house arrest in 2011 after calling for demonstrations in support of the Arab Spring uprisings in the region.
