Bollywood star Ranveer Singh is facing legal trouble after an incident at the 2025 International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa allegedly offended Hindu religious sentiments. The FIR was lodged in Bengaluru on Wednesday, January 28.
The FIR, registered at Bengaluru’s High Grounds Police Station, alleges that Ranveer mocked sacred aspects of the Chavundi Daiva tradition of coastal Karnataka during a stage performance at IFFI on November 28, 2025.
According to the complaint, filed by lawyer Prashanth Methal, Ranveer mimicked Panjurli and Guliga Daiva expressions in a crass and humorous manner. He reportedly referred to the Chavundi Daiva as a “female ghost,” which the complainant claimed denigrated the religious tradition.
Legal provisions invoked
The complaint invokes Sections 196, 299, and 302 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The FIR follows a court directive issued on January 23, 2026, ordering the High Grounds Police Station to file a formal complaint under Section 175, clause 3 of the BNS.
Ranveer Singh reportedly conducted the alleged act during a mimicry performance inspired by the Daiva scene from Rishab Shetty’s film Kantara: Chapter 1 – A Legend. The FIR claims that the act was “crass, humorous, and disparaging,” targeting sacred elements of the coastal Karnataka Daiva heritage.
