US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said he expects protests in Iran to flare up again, as the country’s worsening economy remains the public’s central concern.
Addressing the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Rubio said the Iranian leadership is weaker than at any point in recent years.
He said the authorities lack the means to address the core grievances of protesters, noting that unlike earlier unrest driven by social or political issues, the current crisis is rooted in economic collapse.

Separately, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has delivered strong remarks directed at Iran, claiming that the government lacks legitimacy and may face its end within weeks.
Speaking about Iran’s leadership, Merz said: "A government that relies on 'violence and terror against its own people to remain in power cannot last. He stated that such a regime has limited time left.
The German chancellor also expressed backing for Italy’s initiative calling on the European Union to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation.
