Former Miss Universe hopeful and TV host Jelyn Alvarez has revealed that she is battling breast cancer at the age of 33. The news was shared by the renowned personality on Instagram, where she described how her life has dramatically changed following the diagnosis.
Alvarez expressed regret for initially not taking her symptoms seriously and urged women to avoid making the same mistake. She wrote that she is navigating this difficult phase with strong faith, complete trust in God, and a calm heart.
“There comes a moment in life when you face death and say, ‘Not now, not with me.’ That is when you discover your true strength and courage,” Alvarez said.
In a TV interview, she explained that she had first noticed a lump in her breast but initially ignored it. Over time, the lump grew, prompting medical examination, which confirmed breast cancer. She also noted a family history of cancer, saying she should have been more vigilant from the start.
Alvarez shared some encouraging news, stating that the cancer has not spread to other parts of her body. She is currently undergoing chemotherapy, has lost her hair, and wears a wig.
The model said she plans to share her journey publicly on social media to inspire other women and emphasize the importance of timely medical check-ups.
Jelyn Alvarez represented San Lorenzo in the 2021 Miss Universe Puerto Rico pageant, finishing in second place and winning the “Total Look Award.” In November 2024, she was also present on stage to crown the winner of the Miss Universe finals.
