WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new feature that could reshape how Channels communicate with their followers.
The feature has been spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.4.5 and introduces status - style updates for Channels that automatically disappear after 24 hours, similar to regular WhatsApp Status.
According to reports, WhatsApp is working on a dedicated status option within the Channels section. This will allow channel administrators, including creators, brands, and businesses, to share temporary updates without posting them on the main channel feed.
With this feature, channel admins will be able to upload images, videos, and voice messages as status updates. Unlike standard Status posts that are shared with contacts, these updates will be visible exclusively to the followers of the channel.
Similar to regular WhatsApp Status, channel status updates will remain visible for only 24 hours before disappearing. This offers admins a quick and informal way to share announcements, promotions, or timely information without cluttering the channel timeline.
The feature is expected to appear in the Channel Status section under the Updates tab for administrators. Followers will be able to view these updates by tapping on the channel’s profile icon and can react using emoji reactions, just like regular Status updates.
The report also notes that views will remain anonymous. Channel admins will only be able to see the total number of views, not the identities of viewers, ensuring follower privacy.
As the feature is still in the testing phase, there is no official word on when it will be rolled out to the stable version of WhatsApp. However, once released, it could provide Channels with a more flexible and engaging way to connect with their audience.
