Apple has introduced a new version of its AirTag tracking device, promising better performance through internal upgrades rather than new features.
Dubbed simply “the new AirTag,” the device focuses on improved accuracy, range, and sound to make lost items easier to locate.
Apple first launched the AirTag five years ago, and it quickly gained popularity for tracking keys, bags, and other personal items. Over time, the device found wide use across everyday scenarios, from misplaced wallets to lost luggage.
However, the original AirTag also raised concerns around unwanted tracking and stalking. Apple responded by gradually adding safeguards and privacy protections, which helped address many of those issues.
What’s new in latest AirTag
The new AirTag is powered by Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip. This is the same chip found in some of Apple’s newer devices, including the iPhone 17.
According to Apple, the upgraded chip allows Precision Finding in the Find My app to work from up to 50 percent farther away, making it easier to track down lost items.
Louder speaker improves findability
Apple has also upgraded the AirTag’s built-in speaker, making it 50 percent louder. This change directly addresses user complaints about struggling to hear the sound when trying to locate items nearby.
Combined with the increased range, the louder speaker should reduce frustration in situations where finding an item requires precise positioning.
Existing features get spotlight
Alongside the hardware update, Apple highlighted existing AirTag features. The company reiterated that AirTags use encryption to ensure only the owner can access location data.
Apple also pointed to its partnerships with airlines, which allow users to temporarily share an AirTag’s location through Apple’s network to help recover lost luggage.
Despite the improvements, Apple made it clear that the new AirTag does not introduce major new features. The update focuses entirely on improving accuracy, volume, and tracking range rather than adding new functionality.
In that sense, the new AirTag is an incremental upgrade rather than a complete redesign.
Pricing and availability
Apple has kept the pricing unchanged. The new AirTag costs $29 for a single unit or $99 for a pack of four.
The updated AirTag is available to order now through Apple’s website and will arrive in physical Apple Stores later this week.
