The T20 World Cup is entering a tense phase as Bangladesh’s participation hangs in the balance.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) remain at odds over the venue, with a final decision expected today.
The ICC has reportedly set a deadline for today for Bangladesh to confirm their participation in the World Cup. However, negotiations have hit a stalemate. The ICC has refused to move matches from India to an alternative venue in Sri Lanka, citing logistical challenges.
Meanwhile, the BCB has reiterated its firm stance against playing matches on Indian soil due to security concerns. The Bangladesh sports advisor emphasized that the board will not yield to pressure from India or the ICC.
Calls for alternative venues
Bangladesh has requested that Sri Lanka be considered as an alternative host for the matches. The board and players have raised concerns over safety and the uncertain situation, adding pressure on the ICC to make concessions.
Captain Liton Das expressed the players’ apprehensions, stating, “It is not known whether we are going to play the World Cup or not,” highlighting the uncertainty affecting the team.
If Bangladesh decides to withdraw, it could disrupt the tournament schedule and impact the ICC’s planning. The deadlock underscores rising tensions between cricket boards and the governing body over venue security and political sensitivities in the region.
