India has decided to temporarily withdraw the families of its diplomats from Bangladesh, citing security concerns as political tensions rise ahead of the country’s general election on February 12.
An Indian official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed on Wednesday that the government would pull back diplomats’ families and dependents from Bangladesh due to mounting security threats.
The official described the move as part of “internal readjustments” and did not provide a timeline for when families might return. Indian media reports first flagged the withdrawal earlier this week.
Election-related tensions in Bangladesh
Campaigning for Bangladesh’s upcoming general election begins on Thursday, triggering widespread protests and counter-protests. Political unrest has strained relations between India and Bangladesh, particularly after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India in 2024 following violent demonstrations.
In December, India summoned Bangladesh’s high commissioner to raise concerns over the deteriorating security situation, especially threats targeting the Indian mission in Dhaka.
Diplomatic response
The foreign ministries of India and Bangladesh have not immediately responded to requests for comment. Observers note that the withdrawal of families is a precautionary measure amid escalating tensions and could affect diplomatic operations in the short term.
