WhatsApp is developing a long-awaited feature that will bring group voice and video calls to its web client, significantly narrowing the gap between the browser version and its mobile and desktop apps.
The feature is still under development and has not yet rolled out to beta testers. However, early indications suggest that users will soon be able to start and join group calls directly through WhatsApp Web, without needing to download or install the desktop application.
This update is part of WhatsApp’s broader strategy to make its web experience nearly identical to its mobile and desktop platforms, allowing users to switch between devices seamlessly without losing access to core features.
Group Calling in the Works
WhatsApp Web already supports one-on-one voice and video calls. The company is now working to extend this functionality to group chats, a feature that has been widely requested by users.
Once introduced, the update is expected to allow users to start group voice or video calls directly from a group chat, join ongoing calls through a web browser, receive call notifications within the web interface, and participate without installing any additional software. This will be particularly helpful for users on shared or temporary computers where app installation is restricted.
Participant Limit
Similar to the mobile app, WhatsApp Web is expected to support group calls with up to 32 participants. However, this limit has not been officially confirmed. The company may initially roll out support for smaller group - such as 8 or 16 participants - and gradually increase the limit to ensure call quality and system stability.
If launched as planned, the feature would mark a major upgrade for WhatsApp Web, making it a more complete and flexible communication platform.
